Sure.. here are some answers.. Let me know if you need more. I bought the TC's from some one on this forum.. One suggestion, make sure that you have the right ones for the car. The only problem I had along the way was the TCs were actually for a VR6 Golf and not for my car. The fronts went on fine but the back did not fit. I didn't realize they were the wrong model until I had completed the front.. I was with out a car for a week because..

1. Do you have a Bentley? Did you need it for this job?
I do have the Bentley CD. It was not 100% necessary, but was useful in understanding the trim I needed to remove on the back seat. Basically you have to take the trim off the back seats, and the back shelf out to get to the rear struts.

2. Did you find a procedure posted anywhere on here?
Yea.. I started out looking at these procedures. The Passat is actually a lot easier. (see #3)

3. Did you compress the springs in the car?
No I did not compress the springs in the car. Unlike the Jetta in the instructions above. It is not necessary. You can do the compressing outside of the car. I borrowed the compressor from AutoZone.

4. How big a job is it, any specialty tools?
Plan for a weekend incase anything goes awry.
Special tools, parts.
a. Some people on the forum say you need to replace the 'stretch bolts' on the bottom of the shocks. There are 4 in front and 2 in backs. If you desire to do this, although there has been controversy whether it is necessary. You can buy the bolt kit from IMPEX (www.vwparts.com)
b. New bearings and mounts are recommended as well.
c. check out the rubber boots around the struts. If they are ripped you may want to replace them.
Tools:
d. I had a torx wrench. Made the job a LOT easier. The rusted bolts at the bottom of the struts would have been a bitch to get out without the torx wrench. I purchased the torx wrench for 15 bucks at Wal-Mart.
e. Good set of metric sockets (I think 23 Metric was the size had to go out and buy since my kit didn't have this size. Fortunately I am walking distance from Sears)
F. Metric allen Wrenches or a VW Tool for removing the front shocks. I used a vice grip around the appropriate sized socket and used the allen wrench to hold the spindle still. Again you can search on the forum for a cool looking tool which is a socket wrench with a whole in the middle to allow you to socket/ratchet with the allen wrench in the middle. I have seen this tool subsequently at Napa auto parts.

G. Spring compressor (I borrowed one from Autozone). The AZ one I borrowed required a US measure 1/2 inch socket.

H. I had a Propane torch which I had purchased for a prior job. My bolts were quite stubborn to get off. So I torched them to get them to expand prior to torxing the bolts off.

Let me know if you need more specifics. I did take pictures along the way but haven't developed them yet. I'll probably post these on the web as well..

Mark
